What's it like to work at Spheris? Let our MT tell you.
Joyann: A career with flexibility.
For Joyann, a Spheris MT since 1999, transcribing medical records from her home outside San Antonio is as close to as perfect a job as she can imagine.
"I love it," she says. "Being an MT is such a good fit for me in so many ways."
Joyann worked as a legal secretary for many years, before the lawyer she worked for shut down his offices in 1998.
She enrolled in a Medical Transcription Certification Program, managing three part-time jobs during the year she was in school.
"Medical transcription came easy to me because I had taken a lot of Latin and Spanish in high school, and I found that helped with all the medical terminology," she says.
She joined Spheris in 1999, working from her home in rural upstate New York, then moved to Texas shortly thereafter.
A typical day
Joyann works from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. out of a converted bedroom in her home. The office is painted lavender and has flowery curtains, as well as a cherry wood desk she bought with a reference bonus from Spheris. The desk overlooks a garden blooming with 25 different kinds of rose bushes.
"What I love about working at home is on my lunch break I'll go down to the garden and pull some weeds or pick some roses to put on my desk," she says.
As a night person, she enjoys the freedom to run errands in the morning and work in the afternoon and evening.
Joyann also appreciates the time she gets to spend with her two grandchildren. Her daughter lives about a mile away, so she's frequently called on for babysitting.
"With my schedule, I have the flexibility. They are the joy of my life," she says.
